Strays

For a person to appear in a Strays Index, someone has to report it to the appropriate index keeper. East Yorkshire Strays can be reported using our Strays Report Form.

A stray is someone who, at some time, was either born or has lived for some time within (for our purposes) the East Riding of Yorkshire and went somewhere else to live, marry, have children or die.

Using my own travels as an example, I;

  • was born in Hull, where I lived for 16 years (birth certificate, baptism records, school records, 1961/71 census),
  • lived in Hereford for 1 year (educational records, employment records),
  • moved to Lincolnshire for 2 years (electoral register, employment records),
  • spent 3 years as a resident of Oxford (educational records, electoral register, employment records),
  • spent 2 years living near Stamford (electoral register, employment records),
  • moved to Penzance for ten years (electoral register, employment records, 1981 census),
  • married in Penzance, (marriage certificate, newspapers),
  • spent 1 year at University in Bristol (educational records, electoral register, wife living in Hull)
  • joined my wife in Hull where our daughter was born.

I've included an example of the types of records where my details will appear, but the list is far from complete. In the future, should anyone ever research my history, checking records of strays might just help them on their way.
