My gt.grandfather bought a plot number 13596 in the Hull General cemetery in 1852, positioned in Compartment 75. It states that it was conveyable to his Heirs and assignes. He died abroad. Is the plot therefore still reserved as he did'nt use it! I have the Certificate.

TAYLOR GROCER'S SHOP

Looking for the Taylor family who owned a Grocer’s shop in Arthur Street/Cecil Street between 1891-1940's. Please does anybody remember this family?

ADAM and ELIZA TAYLOR brought their family to Hull from The Lye, Worcestershire between the 1881 and 1891 Census, appearing then living at 61 Arthur Street (off Plane Street), Anlaby Road, Hull. Eliza was listed as a ‘Grocer’ on the 1891 Census with daughter, Hannah, as an assistant. On the 1901 Census daughter Esther Taylor lived at 58 Cecil Street (off Hawthorn Avenue), Anlaby Road, Hull, recorded as a ‘Grocer Provision Dealer’ (working at home), and it is thought that two Taylor sisters continued running the shop for many years. The Taylor daughters were Hannah, Esther, Mary, Annie and Harriet. My grandfather, Arthur Thomas Taylor, was their youngest brother.

You say ‘SCRUTON’ and I say ‘SCREETON’. The problem came to light when I was trying to follow Screetons of Beverley from the 18th into the 19th c. When the ‘Screeton’ trail ran out, a helpful friend suggested I try ‘Scruton’ and to my surprise, there they were, clearly the same people but now recorded as ‘Scruton’. I suppose an illiterate person gave the name to clergyman or census taker who made of it what he could and, regardless, could not be corrected. When that record was transcribed, were two weak e’s, their loops but pin-pricks, read as a ‘u’. Or was it the other way around? Is it possible that when one was spoken aloud, the other was heard? Or that the pronunciation of the name changed through the years? I’d like to know what my g-g-grandmother’s name really was. And to be able to carry on my research without having to enter both names at every step along the way. Any suggestions?

RINGROSE - I am researching this maternal surname in the Sculcoates, Cottingham and Kirk Ella areas. A wedding occurred between William RINGROSE and Hannah FOSTER on 5 May 1794 at Beverley, Saint Mary and Saint Nicholas and I seek the register details. If anyone is able to check this entry for me, please, I would be in their debt as I live in Essex. (The William that I have traced was born in Cottingham in 1780, so would have been aged just 14/15 at date of marriage - most unlikely! However, I am struggling to find an alternative William elsewhere in the Riding and hope that the marriage entry may assist my researches.) I am happy to exchange information with other members who are also researching the Ringrose surname. Thank you. GLENN

I have a Hannah DIXON who married Francis RILEY in 1778 at Cottingham. Hannah was the daughter of Francis DICKSON, who was baptized on 13 September 1747. Source: Cottingham Parish Register.

Francis Riley died in 1809 and Hannah in 1819, both at Cottingham.

Can anyone provide information on Hannah’s parents and any siblings?

Many thanks.

Posted by Tor Riley (5535) on

I have a Francis RILEY, a yeoman who died 1763 at Cottingham. In his last Will and Testament dated that year he mentioned his wife Mary and these children: Ann - Baptised 1730 at Cottingham. Francis (c’1732-1809) married Hannah DIXON at Cottingham in 1778. Hannah married William FREEMAN at Cottingham in 1767. Dinah married John JENNISON at Cottingham in 1765. Martha BAYLEY [sic] believed to have married Richard BENSON 1761 at Sculcoates. Elizabeth married John HERBERT before 1763.

His first wife was Jane BOCKENFIELD whom he married in 1733 at Cottingham. She died in 1745. Mary was Francis’ second wife, the widow Mary PALMER, whom he married in 1754 at Beverley Minster.

Does anyone have any information about either of these women, the children, or the BENSON, FREEMAN, JENNISON or HERBERT families?

Looking for any descendants of ARTHUR GALE & his wife DORIS MARY JACKSON who were married in Hull in 1915. I found Arthur's name and army number in a small diary that my grandad Herbert Ernest Wilson had in the 1st World war. From the information in the diary I have been able to find many documents regarding Arthur's time with the East Yorkshire Regiment & know that he was in Egypt in 1915. His address when he joined the regiment in 1914 was 7 Nornabell Street, Hull. I vaguely remember hearing grandad speak of Arthur Gale, but I didn't know who he was. From his army records I see that he was a stonemason, which had been grandad's profession, so they would have probably worked together.
Arthur later lived at 41 Abbey Street, Hull. I would very much like to pass all this information to the family of Arthur & Doris.

LADY CLARK OF BRIDLINGTON, 1870's

Lady Clark of Bridlington (or nearby) was the employer of my great grandparents Edward and Ellen Leek possibly during the 1870's onwards. Edward's father, another Edward Leake, was also listed as 'Gardener of Bridlington' on his death certificate in 1906.

I have identified a Lady Margaret Clark living in Bridlington on the 1851 Census, and a Lady Eleanor Clark in Filey, but wonder if anyone knows if either lived in Bridlington around this time zone of 1870's, or has details of the household?

Also, these christenings appear on the IGI records and although I know that some of the people christened died as infants, there is no sign of their deaths or burials on the IGI records. Would I need to come up to Beverley to check the Cottingham registers myself?

I am trying to find the death record of my gt grandparents: Michael & Henrietta ELLIS. Michael was born in Weaverthorpe 1844, lived most of his married life with Henrietta and their children in Nth Burton. By 1901 they were living in Hull, where most of their children ended up also. My grandfather was married in 1906 and it didn't say that his father was 'deceased', so I assume he was still alive then. I have checked through all available records up to 1930's, without success, and I am sure they didn't live that long. Has anyone any suggestions as to where I might look next. Hoping someone can help. Regards Kathy.

Hi, My interests are the following names: THOMAS COLLEY (1795-1869) of Hessle. ELIZABETH HOTHAM (1800-1859) of Hessle (wife of Thomas Colley). I found Elizabeth Hotham Colley's memorial inscription in the Hessle records (M059) but have not found Thomas's. Also not found were the memorial inscriptions for most of their children. GEORGE COLLEY (1818-?), he was alive in 1841 and still in Hessle (he worked for Joseph Pease at Hessle Wood House. WILLIAM HOTHAM COLLEY (1820-?), he was alive in 1851 and still in Hessle with his 2nd wife Sarah (?) and their daughter Mary E. Colley (1850-?). His first wife Mary nee Clegg died March 1849. THOMAS COLLEY (1822-1863), he is listed in the Hessle memorial inscription (M059), he is buried with his wife's family (Gardner), but not his wife Rachael. JOHN COLLEY (1829-1876), he was married to Sarah Anderson who was still alive in 1881 (in Hessle). MARGARET COLLEY (1831-?), she was married to George Peart (1835-1876). Margaret was still alive and living in Hessle in 1891. JAMES COLLEY (1833-?), he was married to Ann Marshall (1835-?), they were both alive and living in Hessle in 1881. JOSEPH COLLEY (1835-?). I am related to MARY COLLEY (dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Hotham Colley), she married THOMAS BROWN Nov 25, 1845, St. James Kingston Upon Hull, and they moved to Canada with their son Charles Thomas in 1862. They also had a son, William (1847-?), who was not with them in 1871 in Canada. If anyone has any information about where the other Colleys are buried I would appreciate it. Thankyou Joy Cawley

My Gt.Gt.Gt G/Father, Samuel Thornton, was born in 1777 in Kingston upon Hull and was baptised on October 16 at Holy Trinity Church. He was married to Mary (date unknown) and they had one son John born in 1804, also baptised at Holy Trinity. I can find no record so far of any other children and wonder if Samuel died leaving Mary a widow who may have married again. If anyone can help with this problem I would be delighted.

WE in OHIO are looking for our WILES family connection in East Riding. Thomas Wiles emigrated to USA in years after our Civil War and raised a family in northern Ohio. Unfortunately, he died early (age 32) and his German born wife spoke or wrote no English. Thus, we have been searching for our roots for over a 100+ years.

Cawood, Nafferton. Does anyone know anything about George and Jane Cawood, who lived in Nafferton around the turn of the 18th century? He was a master bricklayer and a proprty owner. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1782 and married a William Jackson in Nafferton in 1804. I am trying to establish whether she is my ggg grandmother. My Elizabeth Jackson came from Nafferton and eventually settled in Etton with her husband. But she appears in 1841 in Etton, while Jane Cawood's daughter, Elizabeth Jackson, appears in Nafferton with her mother in the same census. I think the Cawoods may have died out, but will be happy to find out they didn't!

I need some local assistance with my family history research because I live in Sydney. You very kindly confirmed the baptism of William Cheselden Brown, at Kingston -upon-Hull in 1801, for me last year. I now have information that his father John Suffield Brown was married in September 1797 to Elizabeth Leonard of Hull at ? Whitby. Could somebody look up the Parish Records to confirm that please. Also I believe that their first son John Suffield Brown II , was ?born on June 15th 1798, Could that be confirmed too. Then the older John Suffield ?died in July 1801, can that be confirmed? His widow is said to have married Mr Peacock in1804? If anybody has access to the Parish Records for Kingston-upon -Hull and Whitby I would appreciate it if those events could be checked. Thankyou. Alastair Brown.

My great great grandfather THOMAS BLENKINSOP was baptised in Appleton Wiske in North Yorkshire in 1782. He married MARY NORTHGRAVES in 1806 in Skirlaugh East Yorkshire and died in 1838 and is buried in Swine Parish Church. For several years I have been trying to trace his parents marriage, without success. His father was also called THOMAS BLENKINSOP and his mother MARY? I know Thomas senior had a brother called JOHN born around 1740 and just to confuse matters they sometimes went under the names BLENKEY OR BLENKY. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who is researching the BLENKINSOPS.
