Transcribing Historical Records

Transcribing Historical Records is vital and can be extremely time consuming. Large organisations such as Ancestry and FindMyPast are not at all interested in the transcription of anything which has no profitable outcome. They are business organisations after all - they exist to make money whereas we, the family history societies, do not. The type of documents and records we transcribe are generally very different. In some cases those records would have been lost for all time were it not for the work of the family history societies and, without the help of our numerous volunteer helpers, our work could not progress at the speed that it does.

There is always a need for new volunteer helpers (members only please) who are able to assist with our projects at the East Yorkshire Family History Society. The following examples are typical of recently undertaken EYFHS projects;Hull Workhouse

  • Transcribing and publishing the surviving admissions registers for Hull Workhouse
  • Transcribing and publishing the records of Sculcoates parish apprentices.
  • Transcribing and publishing the indexes to the local Birth, Marriage and Death Registers
  • Creating a photographic record of local monumental inscriptions
  • East Riding Quarter Sessions settlement and removal orders
  • The (on-going) recording of monumental inscriptions across the whole of our region
  • Hull Charterhouse (God's House Hospital) record books
  • Photographing Hull's Holy Trinity parish records
  • Re-drawing of East Riding tythe maps

In essence, there is just too much going on to add even a fraction of our works here. While many projects, but not all, require the use of a computer, we need photographers, checkers, pen & paper transcribers and helper with an hour or more to spare, at your own convenience. We need volunteers to help at home, at local archives, in churches, churchyards and cemeteries. We don't know where to stop, do we?

PLEASE; if you feel that you have any spare time to dedicate to any of our ongoing projects, complete the Helping with History form, or contact our Projects Coordinator.
