TINDALL family Scarborough. My 3x Great Grandmother was Priscilla Tindall - born 1822 in Scalby and I am trying to discover if the shipowning Tindalls of Scarborough are the same family. Priscilla Tindall's parents were William Tindall (b Scalby 1783) and Ann Tindall (b Scalby. William's parents were George Tindall (b Scarborough 1742) and Mary Yeoman (born Scarborough 1749. Priscilla Tindall married Francis JOHNSON (born 1824 Harwood Dale)of the Hackness Johnsons. Their daughter Mary Jane JOHNSON (born 1846 Scarborough) married Mark WILLIAMSON (born 1847 Langtoft and died 1913 in Scarborough). My Great Grandfather George Frances WILLIAMSON married Sarah Alice HODGSON - they are both buried at Dean Road Cemetery in Scarborough) Sarah Alice was the daughter of Robert Hodgson (born 1830 Scampston) and Jane Greenheld (born 1838 Pickering. The Williamson's owned a pram shop at 36 Castle Road, Scarborough but I am not sure when (possibly in the 1930s) and this is now an Asian restaurant. Apart from wanting to find out about the Tindall connection I wonder whether there is anyone related to me.

Can anyone help please? My grandmother JANE ANN ELIZABETH ROBINSON was born in Aldershott Barracks, Hampshire. She was the daughter of Gervase/Jarvis Robinson 5th Dragoon Guards. She married my grandfather JAMES ROBERT GARDINER (born in Hull 1866) in 1887. She gives her address as 135 Chiltern Street, Hull. I cannot find her anywhere on the 1881 census in England yet she turns up in Hull to marry my grandfather. A witness to her wedding was James Whittaker he is on the electral roll for 1887 living at 135 Chiltern Street. He is not a relative that I know off. The other witness is Sarah Fox. Has anyone any ideas as to why she turns up in Hull? She was born in 1868 so would have been 19 on her marriage and would have needed consent to marry? Any help appreicated.

Hello, When I first started tracing my family history in the early 80's, my sister who lives in Hull visited a Record Offie in Lowgate and recorded some deaths for the Gardiner's which we were tracing. On several deaths the informer is stated as John Myers (joiner) Workhouse. When we sent for a copy of the certificate they have different informers on them. All the other details are correct. Does anyone know why this might be? James Myers seems to be an informer for quite a few people. The period I am talking about is mid 1800's to late 1800's. I have found a James Myers on a census living near Whitefriagate and his occupation is Joiner. Why would he be listed as an informer then the actual certificate gives someone else. Hope someone can give me an answer. Thank you.

Can anyone help me with information about CHRISTIANA STEPHENSON, who was baptised on the 24th July, 1824 ? I am not sure if she was one of the daughters of Marmaduke Stephenson of North Frodingham (my ggg-grandfather, born, c. 1776), and any thoughts would be appreciated. I am trying to trace Marmaduke's ancestors, and family names may well provide the clues I need. I am in danger of landing a few red herrings. Many thanks!

SCARBOROUGH info needed: I am searching for information on my 4th g grandfather, Joseph MERRY. I have found his marriage allegation in 1780 to Sarah ATKINSON in which he is shown as age 24 and a MILITIA MAN. He later becomes a Boot Maker and dies in Scarborough in 1824. Can anyone tell me if there are records of the Militia? Or, why were they mobilized at this particular time? Any information on the surname MERRY in Scarborough would be most helpful. I believe they all traced back to Lockton to at least the 15th century; but they spread out from there to many parts of N Yorkshire, making the finding of Joseph's birth a daunting task, especially from America! Thanks, Louise

My paternal great grandmother Sarah Ann Vause was born in 1829 in Bubwith, E Yorks to 'Margaret' (sole parent on her Birth Certificate) and George Vause, farmer, her father on her Marriage Certificate. She was married to Edward Lister and raised a family in Barlow where he was a master wheelwright and carpenter. The only trace I have of Sarah Ann was possibly her half sister Eliza who was married to George Pearson, grocer, of Hull. I am led to believe that there were many Vauses, Voases in the Drax area and the names were interchanged between families. My question is therefore to ask if there are any members of EYFHS who are interested in the Vause family in E Yorks and might be able to give me a lead. Many thanks, David Lister

Tor Riley asked for information on Agriculture in the 1700s & 1800s. North Yorkshire Record Office Publication 28 is Essays in North Riding History, 1780 - 1850, by R P Hastings. Its a bit dry, but covers the subject (along with the textile industry, which was one of my interests) as well as having a good bibliography. Certainly worth the few ££ it cost. One of my Lincolnshire ancestors is recorded in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census as living in the Sculcoates area of Hull and indeed died there in the 1930s.

His occupation is given as 'sewerman' working for the 'Corporation'. Indeed, he and his wife, also from the Skegness area of Lincolnshire, were married in Hull in the first quarter of 1881 but there is absolutely no trace of either of them anywhere on the 1881 census!

I wonder if anyone has any information (or thoughts on where I may find it) on whether at this time the sewers were being installed in Hull which would explain why they moved to the area. I am assuming that this was a time of great expansion for the region and would be interested to know anything about the job or the Corporation.

Oh, and if anyone has any ideas as to why this couple would not be found on the 1881 census having just got married when we know that they remained pretty constant for the next 50 years, I would be extremely grateful! Many thanks.

Can anyone help me to identify at which Church in Hornsea my ancestors may have worshipped in the early part of the twentieth century?

They lived at 25 Southgate and are buried at Southgate Cemetery. Unfortuantely I have absolutely no knowledge of the geography of Hornsea! I am keen to not only know the likely church but also the whereabouts of its baptismal records; as well as if there is any record of the monumental inscriptions from the cemetery. If anyone with local knowledge of the area could help, I would be extremely grateful. Many thanks.

Whilst searching the '51 census I have found an anomaly. Off Albert Street, Hull (now Avenue, I believe) is Park Place. Two houses there had a couple of "servant" girls. But I have never come across houses just for servants before. My ancestor (William Peck) is visiting one of the houses, but I can find no connection with either of the lasses. Could either (or both) houses be a "House of Ill Repute"? Anybody know the whereabouts of the "Red Light District" of Hull in the mid 1800s?

Hi, I am a new member and I have been researching the SHARP fmaily of Beverley/Bridlington now for several years. Although I have quite a lot of info already, I need to check the parents of THOMAS SHARP b 1796 in Ulrome. Is there anyone willing to do a look up for me next time they are at the records office please. I live near Brighton, so it is a bit of a trek for me, although I have visited in the past. Thanks in anticipation.

I'm researching for a book on the ganseys (guernseys) worn by inland fishermen in the 19thC on the Humber and Ouse. We are especially keen to find some images to use and would, of course, give full credit. If anyone knows of any, could they please get in touch or put me in touch with the images' owners/copyright holders? There are many extant photos of coastal ganseys but we are specifically trying to source good 19thC/early 20thC images of the inland fishermen. Many thanks in advance!

Firstly I would just like to thank whoever was responsible for documenting the MIs in Sculcoates Cemetery South in the 1980s. I had a wonderful Eureka moment when my husband and I managed to fight our way through the 4 ft nettles and ivy to find the headstone of my gt x3 grandfather Thomas McRie and his mother Sarah McRie. Please can I now ask if anyone else is researching this family, or Oates, Charter,Fletcher, Chapman, Drape, Sawney, Purdey or Walton all of Hull to compare notes. Thank you

Can anyone help with regard to my great uncle William Dalton. He was born in Watton, Norfolk on 16th July 1873, his parents being Zebedee and Maria Dalton. At some point he came up to Hull as alot of his many brothers and sisters came here to live. He married a Sarah Jane Borrill on 12th Oct 1912 at Kings Hall Hull, she being a spinster whose father John Borrill was a marine engineer. She was 34 and at the time was living at 15 Goodrick Ter, Cave St, Hull. He was 39 and occupatin color works labourer with addresses of 6 Beaulah Place, Leonard St and also 6 Oxford Ter, Derby St. She appears to have been born in West Hartlepool and have found her on the 1891 census at 7 Jordans Ave, Hull and in 1901 at 157 St Georges Rd, Hull. We think that they had 3 children, Stanley, James and Dorothy. According to family talk he may have died in 1915 as apparently my mum can remember going to visit him in hospital with her mother, his sister - but we think this could be wrong as my mum would have only been 2 at the time, so we are now wondering if it is more likely to be 1918 - though not sure. We can not find anything relating to this family after their marriage - so if anyone thinks that they are related to this family any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My great grandmother, Caroline ENGLISH, who was born on 9 May 1875 at Wainfleet St Mary, Lincolnshire was last heard of ‘officially’ in the 1901 census where she was living in Grimsby with her husband Samuel Henry SMITH and their two daughters, Caroline English Smith and Emily Adelaide Smith.

Despite extensive research I had been unable to discover her fate after 1901 and eagerly awaited the release of the 1911 census. This revealed that Samuel, Caroline (jnr) and Emily were all still living in Grimsby although sadly at three different addresses, indicating that the family had been split up; but there was no record of a Caroline Smith nor, on the assumption that she may have reverted to her maiden name, Caroline English.

A complicated series of searches using the 1911 census database (details of which I can send to anyone interested!) has led me to believe that she moved further up the coast and set up home with James NAYLOR, whose name she took, in Hornsea, East Yorkshire. In 1911, James and Caroline are living in Hornsea with their three children, George (8), Glayds (sic) (5) and Mable (3). To date, I have been unable to find a record of James and Caroline’s marriage nor their deaths. On one of the children’s birth certificates, Caroline gives her maiden name as ENDERBY but I can find no trace of a Caroline Enderby born in Lincolnshire in 1875. I do know however, that Caroline’s sister Annie lived for over 10 years between 1891 and 1901 with a William and Jane Enderby in Sculcoates, Hull and that Jane Enderby (nee Stephenson) was Caroline and Annie’s aunt!

Obviously, this is a very complicated story and I know that I have made many assumptions – has my circumstantial evidence led me up the wrong path? Or can anyone linked to any of these families help me to solve the mystery? I would be extremely grateful for any information, however small. Many thanks.

I have three questions. Firstly, I would like very much to get a copy of the history of Nafferton which was publishd a few years ago, but they seem to be very rare or precious. I am willing to pay. Can anyone help? Secondly, can any help me with the whereabouts or history of the Strickland Estate which was in or near Nafferton from at least 1790 to around 1815 before being broken up and sold off. My four-greats grandfather John Ellyard (Elliot) and his son Samuel were tenant farmers on that estate. Thirdly, I am keen to find newpapers from Bridlingon from around 1914, which might contain reports of the death of my grandfather Willam James Ellyard who was killed by being thrown from a horse in his livery stable. I will be very gateful for any help anyone can provide. Best wishes David Ellyard

Does anyone have any ancestors with the surname PICKERINGwho were adopted? I believe that the first two children of my great grandmother MARY PICKERING were given up for adoption.

Mary was born in Bridlington in 1860, but she came to Hull where her other four children were born.

Through census records, I have found three children who were born in Hull and were adopted. Their name's were JOHN W PICKERING 1881. FLORENCE PICKERING 1883 & HARRY PICKERING 1886. I would very grateful for any information.

Have drawn a blank on two descendents of William Hinds Jackson, listed in the 1891 Census as a pork butcher in Salthouse Lane. He was married to Sarah and the two eldest children were George F and Sophia Jackson. They are both listed as 16 and son and daughter of ... but I am not convinced they are twins. William and Sarah appeared to be 18 and 16 when they were born. William was dead by the 1901 census having appeared to have lived in an area of very poor housing and low life expectancy. Would be interested to hear if anyone has come across George F and Sophia in their research.

Their son, Marmaduke, is found in the 1841 census, in North Frodingham, and on the electoral roll of 1835. A year ago I had no idea of my Yorkshire ancestry at all. Even with the help of some very experienced researchers I have drawn a blank on trying to trace my Gt grandmother Mary Jane TODD nee ANDERSON, born before 4.4.1827 in Kingston upon Hull. She was a governess living with her parents, John and Ann Anderson, in Hull, in 1851. She married Robert TODD born before 1819, a chemist/druggist, in Hull on 25.2.1852. At that time the marriage certificate shows he was living in HUNMANBY, Yorks. They had 5 children, all born HUNMANBY. In 1861, Robert and 4 surviving children were visitors with Robert's parents William and Elizabeth Todd at their farm in Kirton in Lindsey, Lincs. There is a Mary Todd, a washerwoman in Sculcoates, in 1861. In 1871, a Mary Jane Todd is a schoolteacher, born Hull, in Treeton, Yorks. That is the last time we have a positive identification for her. 950 death records have been searched but no trace of her. Robert became a drifter and failed to maintain a home for his family or a job in his profession. The children became domestic servants when they were about 12 years and there is no record of a family home in future census. I think Hunmanby might hold the answer and wonder if there is a way of finding out where the family lived during their short life together there, with Robert, a chemist, working and living in Hunmanby, perhaps. Any suggestions please and thanks.

We have found no birth records of him or his father William Betts, which states on Ernest's marriage certificate that his father was Captain William Betts on a Liner (we have searched the LLoyds Register and RN Lists but no William Betts shows up). The only information we have is a letter which was addressed to Ernest Betts at 98 North Street, Hull in 1922 from the British Legion regarding his pension. Bridlington Union Workhouse 1856 - Can anybody help please? My Great Grandfather Alfred George Nelson was born in Bridlington Union Workhouse on 7 February 1856, his mother's name was Ann Nelson. There was another illegitimate child born in 1857 to Ann Nelson, whose abode was in Speeton, named Esther Jane Jemmeson Nelson. During his lifetime Alfred also used the name Arthur, and he lived in Speeton from 1884 until his death in 1950. I am trying to locate a list of inmates' names and ages for 1856. I have looked in the Guardians' Minute Book for 1856 and logged the name, age and originating parish whenever inmates are mentioned in the Minutes. The catchment area for the Workhouse consisted of 30 towns and/or parishes - so looking for Ann Nelson with no age and no birthplace in 1856 is proving a daunting task. Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Hi there. I am new to family history and have run into a problem very early in my attempt to find details of my mother's family. My mother lost her mother when she was 7 years old and so does not remember much about her background but i have managed to trace the marriage of my mother's parents, Frederick William Murphy and Jennie Atkinson in Sept 1911 at Hull Registry Office. No father was shown for Jennie, aged 17,on the marriage certificate. I think Jennie was actually Jane Ann Atkinson born in Buckton, September 1894 to Mary Atkinson with no father shown. Birth was registered by Sarah Palmer who was present at the birth and with whom Jennie/Jane Ann lived from at least 1901 where she appears on the census as an adopted child living in Buckton with Sarah Palmer and her family. Sarah Palmer had three unmarried sons two of which were of an age to be potential fathers of Jennie Atkinson and one of which was working on a farm with a William Atkinson who had a sister named Mary. Given this was a small rural community in which the church was likely to feature significantly i wondered whether church records or even school records might shed some light on who Jennie's father was. Can anyone suggest what church/school would have served the Buckton area? Any guidance on other places i can look for the missing father would also be much appreciated. Thank you

I am researching the MAJOR family and I am currently interested in Thomas Major who married Mary Milner in 1767 at North Burton/Burton Fleming.
Further information shows that Thomas was 29 when he married and he came from Easton, Bridlington. However, I cannot find his birth/christening in the IGI index for 1738 or there about. I am aware this index is not complete and I will have to travel to Beverley/Bridlington to do more research.
Has anyone done research in this area who would be interested in sharing their data.

I have found his marriage to Charlotte Akester in Hull 20/11/1820, also on the 1841 census still in Hull with his children Joseph 15, Ann 15, Thomas 10, Alfred 5, Frances 1, James and Anna both 5. I am a descendant from one of his children born at a later date, Frederick b 1847. Frederick is shown in the workhouse in 1851 with James b.c. 1839 & Emma b.c. 1843. Charlotte died in 1849. I am looking for Thomas's death and any information on his siblings parents, anything at all. I have also found a Thomas Kay in the Baines 1823, Directory on Genuki showing him as a farmer in Stoneferry which is only a stones throw from the village of Sutton. I still live in the area. Any help would be much appreciated. Elaine

I would like to know if any information exists on criminal proceedings in Scarborough or Gristhorpe for around 1880-1890.

My great-great-grandfather changed his name a few times and I wonder if he was trying to avoid more than just his estranged wife.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, I am looking for any information on the BARKER family from the Scarborough area. My g-g-grandfather was Major BARKER (Major is his firat name not a title). He was born in 1829 in Muston to Margaret BARKER (no father listed). The next mention of him is in the 1841 census where he is in the Scarborough Union Workhouse.. no mention of his mother. Major married Harriet JOHNSON in Filey in 1853. Harriet was born in Filey in 1824. The couple lived in the Scarborough/ Gristhorpe area (as per 1861 and 1871 census records). However, there seems to have been some kind of a split in the family as Major was living as a lodger in the household of Sarah A HALLIDAY in Scarborough in 1881. In the same census Harriet was in Gristhorpe. Harriet died in October 1890. In the 1891 census, Major is listed as Major Barker HOLLIDAY living in Scarborough with Sarah A HOLLIDAY. I have just found Major's record of death (Major Barker HALLIDAY 1898 in Scarborough) and have applied for the certificate but will need to wait until it reaches me here in Australia. I have also found a record of marriage between Sarah Ann A HALLIDAY and George Major B HALLIDAY in Scarborough in 1891. I am pretty certain that this is him but have not yet applied for this certificate. If anyone has any knowledge of this family or is able to advise me where i might find a record of burial for either Harriet, Major or Sarah I would be very grateful. Thanks

My family includes a number of Boults, originally from North Yorkshire, then via the Driffield area to Hull. Some of the loose ends include: (1) Where would be the burial place, if it can be found, of Charles Boult who died in the Charterhouse in Hull on 8 March 1917? (2) How do I, from Hampshire now, find a newspaper report (if there was one) of an accident in the Autumn of 1914? The accident in question was to Charles William Boult, a stonemason, who died when a block of stone fell off a lorry. (3) There was a shipping accident in the Humber in January 1910, when Frank Burkill was drowned; the body was not recovered until June. He came from South Ferriby, but the incident may well have been reported in Hull. I could go on, but my query is, in essence, what on-line sources are there for such information?

Does anyone know a photographer, amateur or professional, in or near Withernwick who could photograph a grave marker now (or until recently) stored in the church at Withernwick - a long way from my home near Sheffield. I was shown it a few years ago by the then church warden, David Smith, but I have lost his contact details and he seems to have moved as he is not listed in the telephone directory. I am looking for information concerning ancestors of mine from Rise, and also North Frodingham. Here's a bit of background. MARMADUKE STEPHENSON(b.1780) married ELIZABETH HUDSON on the 26 March 1810 at Rise. Their children were baptised at Rise: Isabella on the 6 January, 1811 and Martha on the 5 April 1813. (There were other children: Susannah, baptised 20 July 1818, died 30 Aug 1818; Elizabeth baptised 11 July 1814, Christiana baptised 24 July 1824 and Mary baptised 11 June 1820, all at Rise.) Mary went on to marry CHRISTOPHER HEBB, bricklayer of North Frodingham, and Isabella married his brother THOMAS. Marmaduke and family were living in North Frodingham by the time of the 1841 census in 'The Mill House' ... By 1841 Isabella was running a grocer's and draper's shop. Thomas Hebb died, and Isabella remarried (her new husband was one George Williamson.) Martha had married into the Witty family of Leven, and was also running a grocery. I would love some more information on the Stephensons, and also the Hudsons. If anyone knows anything about their lives in Rise - prior to North Frodingham - or where they came from, or what they did (Marmaduke was described as a 'shepherd' - but by the 1841 census he was 'a farmer' ...) please don't hesitate to contact me. In the mid-1800s, my immediate ancestors (Marmaduke Stephenson Hebb and his wife Ellen Gray) made their way south to London. Appropriately, their daughter Edith - my great-grandmother - married into the rag trade. (Thanks to your excellent series of Monumental Inscriptions, I think that Marmaduke Stephenson may be one of the 'missing tombstones' from North Frodingham churchyard - I think he died in the 1860s, or a bit earlier, so that would probably fit ... oh well.) Many thanks in advance.

Hi I am trying to trace the Thompson family name. I have managed to get back to 1776 with some degree of certainty. I am trying to find further details of francis Thompson born about 1776 in Elloughton. He was married to Mary ? surname. He does not appear in the 1841 CensuS data so I am assumimg that he died before this. He had a son Robert who was born around 1805 also in Elloughton. I am tring to do this from afar (North Aberdeenshire). Can anyone advise on a strategy on how to verify this information and perhaps obtain details of Francis's death and his parents - father was John Thompson according to IGI. I am kind of new to this - have only been researching this for 2 weeks. Where would parish records for North Ferriby and Elloughton be held? Which graveyards would persons dying in these two parishes be buried? Many thanks. Craig

ADAM and ELIZA TAYLOR brought their family to Hull from The Lye, Worcestershire between the 1881 and 1891 Census, appearing then living at 61 Arthur Street (off Plane Street), Anlaby Road, Hull. Eliza was listed as a ‘Grocer’ on the 1891 Census with daughter, Hannah, as an assistant. On the 1901 Census daughter Esther Taylor lived at 58 Cecil Street (off Hawthorn Avenue), Anlaby Road, Hull, recorded as a ‘Grocer Provision Dealer’ (working at home), and it is thought that two Taylor sisters continued running the shop for many years. The Taylor daughters were Hannah, Esther, Mary, Annie and Harriet. My grandfather, Arthur Thomas Taylor, was their youngest brother.

You say ‘SCRUTON’ and I say ‘SCREETON’. The problem came to light when I was trying to follow Screetons of Beverley from the 18th into the 19th c. When the ‘Screeton’ trail ran out, a helpful friend suggested I try ‘Scruton’ and to my surprise, there they were, clearly the same people but now recorded as ‘Scruton’. I suppose an illiterate person gave the name to clergyman or census taker who made of it what he could and, regardless, could not be corrected. When that record was transcribed, were two weak e’s, their loops but pin-pricks, read as a ‘u’. Or was it the other way around? Is it possible that when one was spoken aloud, the other was heard? Or that the pronunciation of the name changed through the years? I’d like to know what my g-g-grandmother’s name really was. And to be able to carry on my research without having to enter both names at every step along the way. Any suggestions?

RINGROSE - I am researching this maternal surname in the Sculcoates, Cottingham and Kirk Ella areas. A wedding occurred between William RINGROSE and Hannah FOSTER on 5 May 1794 at Beverley, Saint Mary and Saint Nicholas and I seek the register details. If anyone is able to check this entry for me, please, I would be in their debt as I live in Essex. (The William that I have traced was born in Cottingham in 1780, so would have been aged just 14/15 at date of marriage - most unlikely! However, I am struggling to find an alternative William elsewhere in the Riding and hope that the marriage entry may assist my researches.) I am happy to exchange information with other members who are also researching the Ringrose surname. Thank you. GLENN

Francis Riley died in 1809 and Hannah in 1819, both at Cottingham.

Can anyone provide information on Hannah’s parents and any siblings?

Many thanks.

I have a Francis RILEY, a yeoman who died 1763 at Cottingham. In his last Will and Testament dated that year he mentioned his wife Mary and these children: Ann - Baptised 1730 at Cottingham. Francis (c’1732-1809) married Hannah DIXON at Cottingham in 1778. Hannah married William FREEMAN at Cottingham in 1767. Dinah married John JENNISON at Cottingham in 1765. Martha BAYLEY [sic] believed to have married Richard BENSON 1761 at Sculcoates. Elizabeth married John HERBERT before 1763.

His first wife was Jane BOCKENFIELD whom he married in 1733 at Cottingham. She died in 1745. Mary was Francis’ second wife, the widow Mary PALMER, whom he married in 1754 at Beverley Minster.

Does anyone have any information about either of these women, the children, or the BENSON, FREEMAN, JENNISON or HERBERT families?

Samuel WARDELL was listed as pauper inmate in Dyer Lane, Beverley in the 1861 census RG9/3568 Folio 76 p14
. what was this since no details are shown on the Census. Only imnates are listed and no staff are given and I can find no help from the enumerators description of the district.
Was this a local workhouse ?

Looking for any descendants of ARTHUR GALE & his wife DORIS MARY JACKSON who were married in Hull in 1915. I found Arthur's name and army number in a small diary that my grandad Herbert Ernest Wilson had in the 1st World war. From the information in the diary I have been able to find many documents regarding Arthur's time with the East Yorkshire Regiment & know that he was in Egypt in 1915. His address when he joined the regiment in 1914 was 7 Nornabell Street, Hull. I vaguely remember hearing grandad speak of Arthur Gale, but I didn't know who he was. From his army records I see that he was a stonemason, which had been grandad's profession, so they would have probably worked together.
Arthur later lived at 41 Abbey Street, Hull. I would very much like to pass all this information to the family of Arthur & Doris.

HACKETT - Family Photograph, Hull

My maternal aunt Clara LEAKE married Joseph Arthur HACKETT in Hull during December 1927. Looking for names of Joseph’s two younger sisters who appeared in a family photograph taken in Hull about 1918. May have been Edna Hackett (b.Jul qtr.1904 Sutton) and Annie Elizabeth Hackett (b.Jan qtr.1907 Hull). Willing to provide a copy of this photograph only to either sister or one of their descendants upon proof of relationship, together with a copy of a photograph of possibly Joseph’s grandmother Mary Jane Hackett (likeness very faded) [p/p only please]. Research details of family tree also available upon request.

JOSEPH ARTHUR HACKETT was born 23.2.1902 Hull and died 17.12.1982 Westwood Hospital, Beverley. Occupation: Engineer and Technical College Lecturer.

I have researched his ancestors as:

Parents: Charles James Hackett (1876 Hull) m.1901 Hull to Annie Elizabeth Page (1875 North Newbald)

Grandparents: Joseph Arthur Hackett (1852-1933 Hull) m.1875 Hull to Mary Jane Cole (1852 Middlesbrough)

Great grandparents: Charles James Hackett (1818 Cromford, Derbyshire) m.1848 Hull to Caroline (formerly Wildbore née Darby) (1822 Hull). Charles James Hackett was drowned in Princes Dock Westside, Hull in July 1888.

Joseph’s great(x3)grandfather, John Hackett (1745-1808 Cromford, Derbyshire) was reported to have worked with Sir John Arkwright in Derbyshire, and supervised the building of Scotland’s first cotton mill in Penicuick. His son Richard also worked as accountant and manager of one of the Arkwright Cotton Mills.

LAYCOCK : My maternal grandfather William Herbert LAYCOCK was born in Frederick Terrace, Hull in 1878. He married Florence SPOURS 1907, and was widowed in 1913. In 1901 he is living at Laurell Grove and his occupation is railway clerk. In 1913 he was living - we believe - in Hessle since that was were our mother was born and his wife died. Our mother was raised by another couple. To the best of family knowledge he continued to work for the railway. We also believe that he was still alive in the 1950's and was known to have been in Hull on at least one occasion. Probably he was still living there. My efforts to find out what happened to William Herbert have hit the proverbial brick wall. Does anyone out there have any information and can anyone tell me which Railway company he was most likely to be employed by since I think it might be worth my looking at railway records

Census Returns (1861-1881) for this couple and family show his wife recorded as “Annie Walker”. Matthew d.1894 Hull and his wife Annie appears on the 1901 Census.

LADY CLARK OF BRIDLINGTON, 1870's

Lady Clark of Bridlington (or nearby) was the employer of my great grandparents Edward and Ellen Leek possibly during the 1870's onwards. Please does anyone have information on this lady and Clark household in the area? Edward Leek (b.1855 Bridlington) worked as her head gardener, and Ellen (b.1849) as her maid. Edward's father, another Edward Leake, was also listed as 'Gardener of Bridlington' on his death certificate in 1906.

I have identified a Lady Margaret Clark living in Bridlington on the 1851 Census, and a Lady Eleanor Clark in Filey, but wonder if anyone knows if either lived in Bridlington around this time zone of 1870's, or has details of the household?

I am interested in the Hallgate Zion Independent Church in Cottingham, which I believe may have been started by Methodists. A number of my ancestors were christened there between 1767 and 1773. Can anyone shed some light on the church?

Also, these christenings appear on the IGI records and although I know that some of the people christened died as infants, there is no sign of their deaths or burials on the IGI records. Would I need to come up to Beverley to check the Cottingham registers myself?

Many thanks.

THOMAS COLLEY (1822-1863), he is listed in the Hessle memorial inscription (M059), he is buried with his wife's family (Gardner), but not his wife Rachael. JOHN COLLEY (1829-1876), he was married to Sarah Anderson who was still alive in 1881 (in Hessle). MARGARET COLLEY (1831-?), she was married to George Peart (1835-1876). I am related to MARY COLLEY (dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Hotham Colley), she married THOMAS BROWN Nov 25, 1845, St. James Kingston Upon Hull, and they moved to Canada with their son Charles Thomas in 1862. They also had a son, William (1847-?), who was not with them in 1871 in Canada. If anyone has any information about where the other Colleys are buried I would appreciate it. Thankyou Joy Cawley

Looking for our WILES family of Otteringham/Holme on Spalding Moor Robert Wiles/Jane Ream Wiles--sons Thomas and Richard--daughters Jane and Sarah. WE in OHIO are looking for our WILES family connection in East Riding. Thomas Wiles emigrated to USA in years after our Civil War and raised a family in northern Ohio. Unfortunately, he died early (age 32) and his German born wife spoke or wrote no English. Thus, we have been searching for our roots for over a 100+ years.

Cawood, Nafferton. Does anyone know anything about George and Jane Cawood, who lived in Nafferton around the turn of the 18th century? He was a master bricklayer and a proprty owner. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1782 and married a William Jackson in Nafferton in 1804. I am trying to establish whether she is my ggg grandmother. My Elizabeth Jackson came from Nafferton and eventually settled in Etton with her husband. But she appears in 1841 in Etton, while Jane Cawood's daughter, Elizabeth Jackson, appears in Nafferton with her mother in the same census. I think the Cawoods may have died out, but will be happy to find out they didn't!

I need some local assistance with my family history research because I live in Sydney. You very kindly confirmed the baptism of William Cheselden Brown, at Kingston -upon-Hull in 1801, for me last year. I now have information that his father John Suffield Brown was married in September 1797 to Elizabeth Leonard of Hull at ? Whitby. Could somebody look up the Parish Records to confirm that please. Also I believe that their first son John Suffield Brown II , was ?born on June 15th 1798, Could that be confirmed too. Then the older John Suffield ?died in July 1801, can that be confirmed? His widow is said to have married Mr Peacock in1804? If anybody has access to the Parish Records for Kingston-upon -Hull and Whitby I would appreciate it if those events could be checked. Thankyou. Alastair Brown.

My great great grandfather THOMAS BLENKINSOP was baptised in Appleton Wiske in North Yorkshire in 1782. He married MARY NORTHGRAVES in 1806 in Skirlaugh East Yorkshire and died in 1838 and is buried in Swine Parish Church. For several years I have been trying to trace his parents marriage, without success. His father was also called THOMAS BLENKINSOP and his mother MARY? I know Thomas senior had a brother called JOHN born around 1740 and just to confuse matters they sometimes went under the names BLENKEY OR BLENKY. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who is researching the BLENKINSOPS.

I am researching the MALLORY family from East Yorkshire. My Great Grandfather was Lewis Mallory b.1862 St Giles Middlesex, the son of Michael Mallory b. 1823 Kilham and Thirza Johnson,b. Bridlington. Lewis Mallory was a bricklayer in Bridlington all his life and lived at various addresses in the High Street/Old Town area. I have a copy of Michael and Thirza's marriage certificate,December 21 1847, which names Michaels father as Michael Mallory, labourer. Other research has shown Michael Mallory (jnr) father to be John William Mallory and mother Catherine (surname unknown). Michael Jnr was baptized at Huggate 2 September 1823. There is a Mallory family from Kilham, mostly bricklayers and builders, but I cannot find a connection to my family, or maybe John William Mallory belongs to this Kilham based family and I have them confused? I already have information of my Mallory family so far, from BMDs and other family members, but any help on finding the parents of Michael Mallory (jnr) or any other info would be gratefully received.

WILLIAM NORTHORP(e)

William Northorp was born c. 1801 and I am trying to find his place of birth. Northorp is an unusual surname and I would be interested to hear of any parish where this name occurs as this may give me a much needed lead.

William married Ann Tweddill in Scarborough in August 1832. He was a Mariner and the Master of the Brig Ann's Resolution from 1829 and Master of the Brig Elizabeth of Scarborough from 1836. The ships were colliers and plyed from Shields to London and Northern France. He died a hero at Le Havre in 1841 whilst attempting to rescue passengers from a sinking ship.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the Port of Scarborough Records for the early 19th century?

I am particularly interested in any information which relates to the village of Langtoft. I have relatively recently started my father's family history and have found a large and very interesting story around the families by the names of BELL, GOSSOP, GRASBY, SMITHSON AND SHARP with links to a much greater number of family lines in the region including the families of Lamplough, Sowersby, Lawty and Holmes in areas from Atwick, Skirlaugh, Beswick, Brandesburton, Wetang and Rillington. I would be very grateful for any information on any of these subjects focussing on the social history in the 19th Century. I have yet to tackle my mother's family of OLIVER who were a well known family of seafarers in Hull, although a lot of research has already been done by my cousins. I would, however like to make contact with anyone with similar interests.

Hi I am trying to research a relative on my mothers side of the family. The family were named WADE and were river boatmen in the mid 1850s the farthest back I have got in my search is a birth in 1834 of a John Wade he married a Sarah Mann in 1856. I am unable though, to trace his father, also called John, a Mariner, shown on his sons wedding certificate as deceased, also shown as deceased on his daughter Matilda's wedding to Robert Massam in 1852. I would expect that he would have been born sometime around 1810 0r so. Oddly I can find no trace of the family in the 1841 or the 1851 census returns. Can anyone help progress my research further. I have tried the usual routes with no luck, including the Parish Register transcripts published by the society,as I don't live locally it is not easy to access the original records at Beverley on the offchance that the entry for John's birth has been missed from the transcripts although I can not be sure that he was born in Hull. Family folklore suggests a possible Lincolnshire connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Brian
