1901 Census
Sunday 31st March 1901
Two minor changes were introduced to the 1891 form; whether the enumerated person was working at home and the language question was extended to include the Isle of Man. The following information was recorded in the schedules about each dwelling and person residing there on the night of the census:
- Address information included more detail than previously.
- Houses: A check box indicating if the building was "Inhabited" or "Uninhabited or Building".
- Name of each resident on census night.
- The relationship of each person to the head of the family, the head usually being the first person listed.
- Each person's "Condition" or marital status. Married (M), Unmarried (U), Widowed (W), Divorced (D).
- Each person's age at the time of their previous birthday was recorded, with no rounding down.
- Sex was indicated by means of the age being entered into a Male/Female column.
- Rank, profession or occupation.
- Employer, Employee or Neither.
- If working at home.
- Where born; parish and county. If born overseas only the country was recorded.
- Whether the person being enumerated was "blind", "deaf or dumb", "imbecile or idiot" or "lunatic".
- Language spoken (Wales and Isle of Man).
The 1901 census was the first to be completely transcribed as it became available to the public and was eventually sold to Genes Reunited
